Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) - organisational structure
Example of:
How establishing good governance and accountability can help embed sustainability.
Key points:
- DWP has established a clear line of responsibility for the core elements of sustainability from the executive level through to Ministers.
- DWP has linked resource management to sustainability by appointing the Finance Director as the Senior Responsible Officer for sustainable development within DWP.
Historically, DWP has a highly integrated model for embedding sustainable development within its organisation. This is depicted in the diagram below.
Minor changes have taken place in the machinery of government since this diagram was produced so it should not necessarily be relied on as a reference piece. But what this demonstrates is how the core elements of sustainability might be addressed at an executive level, and how clear lines of responsibility can be established (in the case of DWP this runs from the sustainable development team to the Senior Accountable officer and ultimately through to ministers.)
